ExxonMobil

Exxon Mobil App
UX

Redesign of the existing Exxon Mobil app for development, to help consumers pay at the pump and drive engagement to offers.

Project Overview

Together, we worked to eliminate distractions and center the experience around what the consumers expect and need.

Revamped and Enhanced Experience with Innovative New Features

I took a central role in orchestrating a comprehensive transformation of the user experience, specifically tailored for Exxon Mobil.

In partnership with the frog team, we charted a visionary path forward and meticulously crafted an adaptable design system, uniquely positioned to guide The Exxon Mobil team toward their strategic objectives. Throughout the entirety of the redesign journey, I played a key role working alongside the Exxon Mobil team, leveraging my expertise and insights to drive forward the design initiatives aimed at enhancing Exxon Mobil's digital experience.

Streamlined and User-Friendly.

We were meticulous in determining the key essentials for consumers at each stage of the process. Instead of inundating users right from the start, we carefully curated content that catered to their immediate needs and context.

Project Insight

Drawing upon our deep industry knowledge, we embarked on a journey of consumer-centric innovation. Our initial steps included heuristic assessments of the current user experience, coupled with an in-depth analysis of relevant in-market and out-of-market case studies. Armed with these insights, I applied a synthesis of industry best practices and research-derived expertise to sculpt novel interaction models and flows, meticulously tailored to the user's context and aspirations.

Within the app, I assumed a leadership role in orchestrating a diverse array of flows and motion studies, all of which were pivotal in shaping the overarching user experience.

Project Timeline

The team adhered to a structured rhythm of two-week sprint cycles. At the onset of each week, the frog team would convene to ensure harmonious collaboration among design leads, interaction designers, and visual designers. Daily check-ins played a pivotal role in maintaining synchronization with fellow designers, facilitating feedback exchanges for charting the most effective path forward, and showcasing ongoing progress.

Research Overview

Design Research Guides Design Refinements

While my direct involvement did not extend to the research phase, we effectively harnessed the insights acquired during this stage to inform and guide the design-to-development phase of the program.

Shaped by input from Exxon Mobil and further honed through Consumer Feedback

Designing for consumers, especially with a dual focus on immediate and future objectives, entails collaboration with diverse internal and external teams, stakeholders, various capabilities, and evolving needs.

Establishing System Rules for Consistency Based on Research to Drive Interactions

System rules played a crucial role in ensuring design consistency within the team. They provided a framework that allowed us to work within defined constraints, which was instrumental in maintaining a swift and efficient design process.

Sprint-Focused Design Excellence: Crafting the Sign-Up and Sign-In Experience

Rapid iteration was crucial to meet program deadlines and ensure the delivery of optimal designs. During one sprint, my focus was dedicated to designing the sign-up and sign-in flow.

Crafting Micro Interactions with Motion Studies

Deliberate micro interactions served to reinforce the brand identity through intentional motion. These animations not only conveyed the desired consumer experience but also provided a visual demonstration to the Exxon Mobil team. My role involved the design of motion studies for loaders that would be consistent throughout the entire user journey.

Engaging and Enchanting Interactions

The app embraces casual greetings, spontaneous interjections, and conversational language, cultivating a sense of familiarity and helpfulness, as opposed to a rigid and corporate demeanor. This amicable tone is complemented by bespoke illustrations and whimsical animations, designed to sprinkle moments of joy throughout the user journey.

In collaboration with another interaction designer, I embarked on several motion studies, including the celebrated "Million Dollar Tumbleweed." Exxon Mobil's enthusiastic response to this playful element was particularly noteworthy, as it ingeniously conveyed to customers their absence of reward points in a lighthearted manner. The tumbleweed, among other factors, contributed significantly to driving new business opportunities for frog.
